Teslas fatal Autopilot accident Why the New York Times got it wrong
Teslas fatal Autopilot accident Why the New York Times got it wrong
In Saturdays New York Times, coverage of Teslas Autopilot crash was framed as a failure of technology on the part of Tesla. But leaving out the context is misleading.
On the front page of Saturdays New York Times, the fatal accident that occurred when Joshua Browns Tesla Model S, in Autopilot mode, failed to brake was featured in two articles examining the circumstances of the crash: the limits of Autopilot, and what it means for Tesla.
The problem is that, in this case, the reporting in the Times was incomplete and ignored the full context of the situation.
But the New York Times articles on Saturday, which were highly critical of Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, failed to fully capture the context of the accident. Heres what the coverage got wrong:
Conflation of Autopilot with a self-driving car. The headline of the front page piece, "A Fatality in a Self-driving Car Forces Tesla to Confront its Limits" is misleading. While the car was in Autopilot mode?akin to an advanced cruise-control?it is not accurate to say that the car was self-driving. Tesla does not make a self-driving car, a fully-autonomous car, or a driverless car. The title sensationalizes the incident, and plays into the fear factor involved when new technology is released.
Not enough information on the caveats of driving with Autopilot. Autopilot is a new technology?and one that, Tesla acknowledges, is imperfect. It is optional, meant only for highway driving. Drivers using Autopilot are required to keep both hands on the wheel?there is an alert, similar to what happens if you dont wear a seatbelt, that goes off if a driver fails to do so. Autopilot drivers are instructed to be alert at all times while the system is enabled.
Drivers are expected to re-engage by shaking on the wheel or pressing the brake when needed. In this case, Brown did not re-engage or apply the brake himself. It is also likely that he was not paying attention?a Florida Highway Patrol sergeant found a portable DVD player loaded with a Harry Potter DVD in Browns Tesla. According to the AP, "Frank Baressi, 62, the driver of the truck and owner of Okemah Express LLC, said the Tesla driver was playing Harry Potter on the TV screen at the time of the crash ... He acknowledged he couldnt see the movie, only heard it."
Prematurely insinuating that Tesla is to blame for the accident. One of the Times pieces calls Brown "a victim of an innovation geared precisely to people like him." But the fact is, while we know that the accident happened during Autopilot, we still dont know what, exactly, went wrong. Until the US Department of Transportations investigation is complete, it is inaccurate to blame the technology.
Few sources from the tech world. The Times quoted analysts from Autotrends and Edmunds, but no one from the AI or self-driving car world. This is a mistake. Since technology is so central to the story, to have no one from inside the tech industry leaves out the most important perspective on the issue.
Few real-world Autopilot drivers sourced. The Times piece quoted one Autopilot driver who expressed concern for safety after the accident?and he had only used Autopilot in a loaner, not regularly.
But over the last few weeks, Ive spoken to half a dozen Autopilot drivers, all of whom have expressed a feeling of safety with the technology?even post-accident. When I talked to a few more directly after the fatal crash, they were unchanged in their opinion, and reinforced the fact that they keep their hands on the wheel while using the technology, as intended. Daniel Nasserian said the accident "doesnt concern me at all. The Autopilot feature is still in its infancy, and I think the media ran with the story because of how new the concept is. The amount of miles driven without a fatality on Autopilot still remains impressive compared to the human error factor."
Why does this matter? When a new technology is released, and malfunctions, there is often an overreaction and a rush to judgment. Cruise control, for example, is not perfect. Nor are air bags, which can kill a driver. Nor are seat belts, which can also be a cause of death. But each of these innovations are designed to protect drivers, and have been shown to save more lives than they take. Likewise, Autopilot is intended as a safety feature, and has a high success rate. This is the first known accident in 130 million miles driven, while, according to a 2015 report by the US National Safety Council, the estimated annual mileage death rate is 1.3 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.
Bryant Walker Smith, professor at the University of South Carolina, and an expert on the legal aspects of self-driving vehicles, makes the following point. "The article depicted Tesla/Musk as indifferent to safety rather than struggling with, and perhaps reaching a different conclusion about, the same issues that are bedeviling the rest of the industry."
"In my experience," said Smith, "the company is attuned to safety. Perfection is not possible, and every company is in some ways learning from its customers experiences. Teslas beta labeling is candid about this?and may even reflect an effort to emphasize the need for caution to its users."
Smith said that the piece "seems to treat Autopilot as nothing more than a convenience feature with no safety benefits?and, indeed, safety detriments."
This is not to let Tesla off the hook. The companys blog post about the accident left much to be desired. It was slightly robotic and tone-deaf, attempting to address the tragedy while simultaneously celebrating and defending Autopilots achievements. And TechRepublic is not a cheerleader of Tesla: we hold the company accountable to answer several critical questions regarding the timeline of the incident and what can be learned from the accident.
Smith poses the following questions, which we plan to cover as answers emerge:
- Should Tesla have monitored its users more?
- Should Tesla have more strongly communicated the limitations?
- Should Tesla have designed and marketed these technologies much more as safety than convenience features?
- Should the systems have been limited to a backup rather than primary role in directing steering and braking? Should the system have been named something more modest?
- Why did Tesla wait to announce this crash?
- Has it already updated its software to account for this scenario (and others)? If so, how?
- Why was there a lag between the fatal accident and the public announcement?
- What has Tesla learned from the accident?
- Will the accident do anything to change Teslas approach?
- Still, it is important to keep the big picture in mind.
"What if Autopilot ultimately prevents more deaths than it causes?
What if the lessons learned through this early deployment helps to advance the state of safety technologies much more quickly than they would otherwise develop?" said Smith.
"In these cases, introducing Autopilot may make sense," said Smith, "and may, indeed, save lives."
The New York Times has since published several more pieces on the Tesla accident, some of which include more details about how the crash occurred. But when such a prestigious publication prints something on the front page that leaves out key points that would tell the full story, we are at risk of misleading the public on a very important issue.

The New Apple Pencil Sketches New Shade on an Old Idea
The New Apple Pencil Sketches New Shade on an Old Idea
The Apple Pencil is upon us. While its not a new concept, it does deserve a more in-depth look at its features and abilities. Its essentially a stylus for the iPad, and its introduction is a bit shocking to followers of Apple products. Steve Jobs is well-known for stating his disinterest in creating a stylus of the iPad. He routinely pointed out that your finger was the best pointing device. With the new CEO of Apple Tim Cook taking the reigns, it seems some big changes are coming to Apple products. If you take a closer look, youll find there are actually several features that make this pencil a really good idea.
The question of why Apple would decide to design a stylus after all these years is an important one. It seems that the stylus will appeal mostly to graphic designers and business professionals who need to mark up their documents on the go. The stylus wont work with the iPhone, and its likely going to require you to purchase a new iPad to get the functionality. This device should help to spur new iPad purchases, and Apple can continue to raise the bar on future incarnations to make it even more feature-rich. It offers a more life-like experience than when using other stylus products. Ultimately, the new Apple Pencil works much more like a real pencil.
It Enhances Precision
Your finger is convenient, and it worked well with the iPad when it was in its infancy. However, as the technology has improved and app developers are creating new technology, its become necessary to introduce a more precise pointing mechanism. Of course, it wouldnt be an Apple product if it didnt do something other products cant do. The Apple Pencil detects position, force and tilt. The pencil should act as a catalyst for app developers to start making apps that take full advantage of the stylus. It can also use your iPad to keep itself charged when youre not using it.How Its Made
The Apple Pencil is made to work with your iPad software. A stylus that you can buy in the store uses passive technology. They are just replacements for your fingers. It much the same way as checkweighers work, the Apple Pencil can sense the amount of pressure you are using. The Apple Pencil and the display are two parts of the same device. The Apple Pencil works with the technology of the display to use both pressure and angle sensing. Its made to work only with the iPad, so you cant use this device with other systems. The device offers very little lag, it connects quickly and it automatically charges when youre not using it. For it to work properly, most of the touchscreen has to be able to sense hand pressure and differentiate it from the Apple Pencil. It Annotates Better
When Apple demoed the new Apple Pencil, they invited a representative from Microsoft on stage. The purpose was to demonstrate how the pen worked in Microsoft Office. The representative demonstrated how items can be circled in documents, and shapes can be drawn directly on PowerPoint slides. Once the objects are drawn, they can be easily converted into graphic objects for placement anywhere in the document. Overall, the stylus worked very well and seemed to make the process of editing documents much more productive. It Draws Better
One of the issues many users report with using a stylus, is that the image doesnt appear on the screen instantly. With the Apple Pencil, when you draw something it appears instantly. This is a crucial step forward that makes it an ideal object for artists who work in graphic design. The ability to detect pressure, force and tilt will enhance shading and dimension in graphics. It works well in Adobe Photoshop FX, and it should also find its way into several other applications that are useful for graphic design.

The New Strategy in the Auto Industry Cars Nobody Will Buy
The New Strategy in the Auto Industry Cars Nobody Will Buy
Car companies are running out of stuff to make and struggling to stand out
The fancy-car selfie is a social media staple. And there will be a steady stream of them starting Saturday, when the masses pour into the annual North American International Auto Show in Detroit. But it will be difficult to picture people actually buying many of this year?s crop of fancy cars.
This is de rigueur at a vehicle convention where regular people with regular paychecks intersect with six-figure speed machines. But the disconnect between the cars and the commerce is more pronounced at this year?s show, because the newest vehicles aren?t really the kind of rides people are lusting after these days. They?re also quite expensive.
The Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 races into a crowded field
Of the 20 or so models unveiled in Detroit this week, four were large, luxury sedans?a class of vehicles whose U.S. sales dropped 15 percent in 2015. Also prominent were premium sports cars, a segment that saw almost one-third of its buyers disappear last year.
The growth in the auto industry of late hasn?t come from low-slung, pricey machines, but rather from pickup trucks, entry-level sports cars such as the Ford Mustang, and SUVs of all shapes and sizes.
So how does a self-respecting car executive explain the carbon-fiber cornucopia delivered to the auto show this week? Well, it?s not that they?re tone-deaf. They know the sales trends better than anyone. It?s just that they?re running out of stuff to make.
While car sales recovered after the recent recession, product planners went for the easy money. They started making and overhauling the vehicles that would move the needle fastest.
Lincoln greenlighted a midsize crossover, the MKC, which parked squarely in the hottest segment of the business. Hyundai made over its Sonata sedan, its second-best seller. Acura designed an all-new sedan for first-time luxury buyers, the TLX. Meanwhile, Volvo spent lavishly to design a Swedish knockout of an SUV, the XC90.
Now all those brands are rolling out swanky sedans. The Lincoln Continental, the Genesis G90, the Acura Precision, and the Volvo S90 are some of the most saccharine eye candy in Detroit.
The new Volvo S90 promises to be as cool and easy as its award-winning XC90 crossover.
There?s a similar shift going on in the world of sports cars. In recent years, Mercedes dialed its SUV production up to 11; Porsche crafted the Macan, a pint-size SUV that quickly became the brand?s top seller in many markets; and Lexus added a similar model in the all-new NX.
One can find all those vehicles on the stands in Detroit?s Cobo Center. But the prime real estate?the spotlit, spinning podiums?will be filled with sportier options: the all-new Mercedes SLC roadster, a souped-up version of Porsche?s 911, a sinuous Lexus that looks like an angry spaceship, and the Buick Avista, a slinky streak of blue.
Buick?s Avista concept drew rave reviews for its leaf-shaped window openings and lustrous paint job
A lot of these cars won?t sell enough to justify their creation. It takes somewhere around $1 billion to develop a vehicle from pencil to final product, so it?s helpful to amortize that cost over as many units as possible.
But car executives have a bigger problem than unit economics to worry about: With a crush of buyers, they just need to get noticed.
Xavier Mosquet, senior partner in Boston Consulting Group?s auto unit, raised his eyebrows as he walked up to the sporty red Lexus. He was surprised that the vehicle was going to find its way to an assembly line, rather than being just a concept car to excite the crowds. Would it make money?
?That depends on how you divide the costs,? Mosquet explained. ?I think this one is for the branding. It?s a halo car.? In short, if the vehicle gets on enough magazine covers and turns enough heads at dealerships, its return will be evident in sales of less flashy Lexuses (Lexi?).
What also helps make the business case (at least a little bit) is China, where drivers?and the driven?still love big, distinguished sedans and stupid-expensive sports cars. Product planners looking to get the OK on a billion-dollar sports-car project, keep one figure at the ready: 9 percent. That?s the average annual growth rate of the passenger-car market in China for the past five years.
Klaus Zellmer, Porsche?s chief executive officer for North America, said he expects the Chinese economy to continue growing at more than 5 percent a year, despite recent signals that the wheels might be coming off.
Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn was also sanguine about China as he pitched a new sedan from Infiniti, his company?s luxury brand. ?When you look at the fundamentals, there is nothing wrong with the development of the Chinese economy,? he said in an interview.
If Ghosn is wrong about that, the car show crowds should be quick with their cameras, because the industry?s stateliest, sportiest stuff, will just idle in dealerships ? and then disappear fast.

What??s New on the iPhone 6S
What??s New on the iPhone 6S

The latest Apple product is being released, and Mac lovers have been lining up to get their hands on the iPhone 6s. So what makes this product so special? Besides the expected software updates and advanced Touch ID, faster 4G and Wi-Fi connections, a sleeker design with a rose gold finish and of course iOS9; what are some of the new features that iPhone-fanatics can look forward to? Since Bend-gate there have been speculations regarding just how durable the latest iPhone will be. Apple have addressed this and have engineered a new alloy of 7000 Series aluminium, the same used in the aerospace industry, to ensure your phone won?t bend in your pocket. But that?s not all they have to offer.
See some of the top new specs below:
3D Touch
This is perhaps the most exciting of the new features of the iPhone 6S. This revolutionary technology combines software and hardware to bring a new dimension of functionality to using your phone. As well as the now familiar touch gestures like Tap, Swipe and Pinch, 3D Touch introduces what Apple refers to as ?Peek and Pop?. Basically, with 3D Touch your phone registers how much pressure you put on your screen. If you select an icon/message/web page, it will open or Peek out; so you get an idea of what it contains. If you want to go into that web page or message you just have to press a little harder and it will ?Pop? open. It also enables the user to make even shorter shortcuts to the camera, messaging and map apps from the home screen. Seeing Apples iPhone 6S in action, it appears to be a sleek transition and one which makes the phone that bit more covetable to this tech-loving writer.Breath-taking New Camera
The camera in the iPhone 6S has 12 megapixels and the shots it takes are absolutely stunning. It?s clearer than my own vision. Apple claims that a camera this good won?t need re-touches or filters on photos ? although I doubt that will stop all the Instagrammers out there. If anything, this will just step up their game. The new iPhone can also take videos four times 1080p meaning your videos will look like something from the silver screen, in the palm of your hand.Do you take a lot of selfies? The front facing camera ? for Facetiming and selfie-taking ? is high definition 5 megapixels. All the better to see yourself with. The iPhone 6S also has a new function: Retina Flash, a flash three times brighter than the previous generation. This, combined with Apple?s True Tone Tech, allows you to have perfectly lit selfies no matter where you?re taking the photo.
Live Photos
As well as having a crisp and clearer shot, the iPhone 6S also enables the user to take Live Photos, literally capturing a moment in time just before and after you take the photo, with movement and sound. Like sleeker gifs if you will. You can activate the live photos simply by selecting a photo and you can also view them on your other Apple devices, and share them around.Computer-Like Performance
The iPhone 6s is run by a 64-bit A9 chip. This chip empowers the iPhone 6S which 70% faster CPU (than the previous iPhone) and 90% GPU; meaning you can enjoy games, apps and videos with far better results. Apple goes for far as to say that it is as immersive as playing a video-game on your desktop or game console. So, will you be lining up with the rest of them to get this beauty?

Upgrade to a new hard drive on your MacBook Pro and clone OSX and BootCamp
Upgrade to a new hard drive on your MacBook Pro and clone OSX and BootCamp
***DISCLAIMER...Its your fault if you screw up your system. Read through the entire post before attempting.
I purchased a new larger capacity hard disk drive (hdd) to upgrade an existing smaller solid state drive (ssd) because I started running out of room. I liked the speed of the ssd, dont get me wrong, but a weighed the options and more storage space was a priority. So I compromised and picked up a Seagate hybrid sshd. Got one while they were on sale $100 through newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178340.
This one took a while to rap my fingers around and Ill say most of it was dumb luck. I know there is WinClone available on OSX and probably would have made this easier. Think WinClone is about $30 and honestly probably would have saved me a bunch of time, but being the stubborn ba$T@rd I am, I decide to stick through it on principle.
What I had...
OSX was 10.8
Windows was 8 with media center
Things youll need:
- hdd enclosure; this is to connect your existing hdd to copy data over to your new hdd
- windows 8 installation DVD (or Win7); needed to allow bootcamp creation
- OSX installation USB or SD drive to boot from; might be able to use the recovery instead
- windows 7 repair CD; needed to run specific commands to fix the boot (the version of win7 repair CD I used was modified because getting the timing right to engage the CD boot process made me pull more hair out than I care to discuss. I renamed the bootfix.bin file from the boot directory. This causes the CD to boot instead of waiting for prompted. The MacBook keyboard didnt work and the screen picture were out of sync to enable to proper timely to engage the CD. You can create your own using UltraISO and renaming bootfix.bin under the boot directory. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/92763248/Repair%20disc%20Windows%207%2064-bit.iso
- GPART CD http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php
- Remove encryption.
1. With your existing OSX installation, install the gdisk program http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/. We will use that to modify our soon to be screwed up hybrid MBR. In the mean time lets take a look at a none screwed up hybrid MBR.
Issue the following commands on your old OSX operating system (OS):
sudo fdisk /dev/disk0
sudo gpt -r -vv show disk0
diskutil list

Steps:
2. Attached your old hdd to a USB enclosure and attached to your macbook. I had purchased a simple USB3 sata link from newegg.com.

3. I made an SD OSX installation media disk. I think you could probably use the recovery hd to do the same thing. I attached the SD to its slot.
4. I then booted the macbook holding the option key down.

5. It should boot and look like the following. If the new hdd has no bootable partition you will not see your new drive. The orange in color USB symbol enclosures are your old OS. The mountain lion emblem is the OSX installation SD. This is whether I think its possible to boot from your old OS recovery hd to perform this next action. I havent tried that. The next action will be to copy your old OSX to the new hdd. I decided to use my OSX SD and booted from that.

6. Select Disk Utility.

7. Your new hdd should be at the top. Select it on the left pane.

8. Now select the partition drop down. This is where we are going to partition and format your new drive. Select 1 partition.

9. Title the new volume "new mac". Ensure it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. Then Select options.

10. It needs to be set to GUID Partition Table. Select OK. Apply.

11. Partition.

12. Once completed your "new mac" partition should show on the left. Select the Restore tab.

13. This is were we can copy our existing OSX OS to the new hdd. Left click on your old OSX partition and hold the mouse button down as you drag it to the Source. Notice the orange color enclosure icon. This indicates an external device. Now drag your newly created "new mac" partition to the Destination. Should look just like mine. Restore.

14. Erase.

15. Should begin copying the data over. This processes should take a while. After that is complete reboot your macbook while holding the option key on boot. Now boot to your new macbook OS. I removed the old hdd and installation SD before booting.

16. Lets see what has changed in our partitions on the new hdd. Here is an example with the above three commands issued again. This was on a 1TB HDD. Notice the size in the fdisk command takes up the entire hdd.

20. I decide to divide my partitions equally. You do what you want. Install. It is required to have the Win8/7 installation dvd installed to get this step rolling.

21. You system will automatically reboot to DVD. ***HOLD THE OPTION KEY DOWN WHEN THE SYSTEM AUTO REBOOTS.*** Now I have done this two different ways. Ive booted to the Windows DVD and formatted the bootcamp partition and not installed a new OS which formats it NTFS. Ive also skipped this step and booted straight to GPART CD as well. I suspect its not necessary to format because when we use GPART to copy the old Windows OS to our new bootcamp partition it takes on the format of the copied partition anyway so why bother. I ejected the Windows installation DVD and swapped for the GPART CD and continued the boot of the CD. With GPART booted it should show your new hdd and old hdd so long as both are still attached to your system. If you forgot just connect and under Gparted select rescan. Notice the far upper right drop down to select drives. Now to distinguish which drive is which the /dev/sda is your onboard hdd and /dev/sdb should be your external. Another way is your new hdd will say BOOTCAMP (FAT32). Your external or old hdd should say either BOOTCAMP (NTFS) or what ever name you modified the volume name to. Mine was Win8Pro.

22. Select your external or old hdd.

24. Now change back to your new hdd and select the FAT32 BOOTCAMP partition. The paste button should become available and select.

25. It should warn you about this action. It should be on /dev/sda4. OK.

26. Select Apply.

27. Another warning. Apply.

28. Working. Could take some time.

29. Once completed, reboot holding the option key and boot to OSX. The Windows partition shouldnt appear here. We need to modify the hybrid MBR. You should see after booting into OSX the Windows drive and its contents though.

30. Now a decided to look at my partitions. #1 is the EFI boot. #2 is my OSX. #3 is my Recovery. #4 is Windows bootcamp. Notice the differences in size. The other thing I noticed was the * was on the OSX #2 and not on the Windows #4 under the fdisk command. This is where printing out the old hdd setting is nice to see the difference.
new hdd

33. Reboot into OSX. Time to make the hybrid MBR right again. Open terminal. Enter the following commands and see the images below. We need to get the hybrid MBR like our old hdd. This is how to do this.
sudo gdisk /dev/disk0
r
h
2 3 4
y
<enter>
n
<enter>
n
<enter>
y
o
w
y
sudo fdisk /dev/disk0
gdisk = allows us to modify the GUID partition. Since Windows requires an MBR which GPTs dont use and only have them for legacy purposes we have to fix it.
r = recovery and transformation options
h = make hybrid MBR
2 3 4 (Thats the number 2 space 3 space 4 <enter>) = modifying those three partitions
y = EFI needs to be first
<enter> = select the default because thats the way our original partition was
n = the bootable flag was not set in our original
<enter> = select the default because thats the way our original partition was
n = the bootable flag was not set in our original
<enter> = select the default because thats the way our original partition was
y = because the bootable flag was set in our original
o = print protective MBR data
w = write table to disk and exit
y = confirm

35. Windows repair CD should load. It should also prompt that your Windows install is corrupt. If you select details it will let you know what its changing. Select Repair and reboot. This will be quick so be fast with the option key and attempt to boot Windows now.

36. Thats it. After booting it might ask to reboot.
