Teslas fatal Autopilot accident Why the New York Times got it wrong

In Saturdays New York Times, coverage of Teslas Autopilot crash was framed as a failure of technology on the part of Tesla. But leaving out the context is misleading.

On the front page of Saturdays New York Times, the fatal accident that occurred when Joshua Browns Tesla Model S, in Autopilot mode, failed to brake was featured in two articles examining the circumstances of the crash: the limits of Autopilot, and what it means for Tesla.

The problem is that, in this case, the reporting in the Times was incomplete and ignored the full context of the situation.

But the New York Times articles on Saturday, which were highly critical of Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, failed to fully capture the context of the accident. Heres what the coverage got wrong:

Conflation of Autopilot with a self-driving car. The headline of the front page piece, "A Fatality in a Self-driving Car Forces Tesla to Confront its Limits" is misleading. While the car was in Autopilot mode?akin to an advanced cruise-control?it is not accurate to say that the car was self-driving. Tesla does not make a self-driving car, a fully-autonomous car, or a driverless car. The title sensationalizes the incident, and plays into the fear factor involved when new technology is released.

Not enough information on the caveats of driving with Autopilot. Autopilot is a new technology?and one that, Tesla acknowledges, is imperfect. It is optional, meant only for highway driving. Drivers using Autopilot are required to keep both hands on the wheel?there is an alert, similar to what happens if you dont wear a seatbelt, that goes off if a driver fails to do so. Autopilot drivers are instructed to be alert at all times while the system is enabled.

Drivers are expected to re-engage by shaking on the wheel or pressing the brake when needed. In this case, Brown did not re-engage or apply the brake himself. It is also likely that he was not paying attention?a Florida Highway Patrol sergeant found a portable DVD player loaded with a Harry Potter DVD in Browns Tesla. According to the AP, "Frank Baressi, 62, the driver of the truck and owner of Okemah Express LLC, said the Tesla driver was playing Harry Potter on the TV screen at the time of the crash ... He acknowledged he couldnt see the movie, only heard it."

Prematurely insinuating that Tesla is to blame for the accident. One of the Times pieces calls Brown "a victim of an innovation geared precisely to people like him." But the fact is, while we know that the accident happened during Autopilot, we still dont know what, exactly, went wrong. Until the US Department of Transportations investigation is complete, it is inaccurate to blame the technology.

Few sources from the tech world. The Times quoted analysts from Autotrends and Edmunds, but no one from the AI or self-driving car world. This is a mistake. Since technology is so central to the story, to have no one from inside the tech industry leaves out the most important perspective on the issue.

Few real-world Autopilot drivers sourced. The Times piece quoted one Autopilot driver who expressed concern for safety after the accident?and he had only used Autopilot in a loaner, not regularly.

But over the last few weeks, Ive spoken to half a dozen Autopilot drivers, all of whom have expressed a feeling of safety with the technology?even post-accident. When I talked to a few more directly after the fatal crash, they were unchanged in their opinion, and reinforced the fact that they keep their hands on the wheel while using the technology, as intended. Daniel Nasserian said the accident "doesnt concern me at all. The Autopilot feature is still in its infancy, and I think the media ran with the story because of how new the concept is. The amount of miles driven without a fatality on Autopilot still remains impressive compared to the human error factor."

Why does this matter? When a new technology is released, and malfunctions, there is often an overreaction and a rush to judgment. Cruise control, for example, is not perfect. Nor are air bags, which can kill a driver. Nor are seat belts, which can also be a cause of death. But each of these innovations are designed to protect drivers, and have been shown to save more lives than they take. Likewise, Autopilot is intended as a safety feature, and has a high success rate. This is the first known accident in 130 million miles driven, while, according to a 2015 report by the US National Safety Council, the estimated annual mileage death rate is 1.3 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.

Bryant Walker Smith, professor at the University of South Carolina, and an expert on the legal aspects of self-driving vehicles, makes the following point. "The article depicted Tesla/Musk as indifferent to safety rather than struggling with, and perhaps reaching a different conclusion about, the same issues that are bedeviling the rest of the industry."

"In my experience," said Smith, "the company is attuned to safety. Perfection is not possible, and every company is in some ways learning from its customers experiences. Teslas beta labeling is candid about this?and may even reflect an effort to emphasize the need for caution to its users."

Smith said that the piece "seems to treat Autopilot as nothing more than a convenience feature with no safety benefits?and, indeed, safety detriments."

This is not to let Tesla off the hook. The companys blog post about the accident left much to be desired. It was slightly robotic and tone-deaf, attempting to address the tragedy while simultaneously celebrating and defending Autopilots achievements. And TechRepublic is not a cheerleader of Tesla: we hold the company accountable to answer several critical questions regarding the timeline of the incident and what can be learned from the accident.

Smith poses the following questions, which we plan to cover as answers emerge:

Should Tesla have monitored its users more?
Should Tesla have more strongly communicated the limitations?
Should Tesla have designed and marketed these technologies much more as safety than convenience features?
Should the systems have been limited to a backup rather than primary role in directing steering and braking? Should the system have been named something more modest?
Why did Tesla wait to announce this crash?
Has it already updated its software to account for this scenario (and others)? If so, how?
Why was there a lag between the fatal accident and the public announcement?
What has Tesla learned from the accident?
Will the accident do anything to change Teslas approach?
Still, it is important to keep the big picture in mind.

"What if Autopilot ultimately prevents more deaths than it causes?

What if the lessons learned through this early deployment helps to advance the state of safety technologies much more quickly than they would otherwise develop?" said Smith.

"In these cases, introducing Autopilot may make sense," said Smith, "and may, indeed, save lives."

The New York Times has since published several more pieces on the Tesla accident, some of which include more details about how the crash occurred. But when such a prestigious publication prints something on the front page that leaves out key points that would tell the full story, we are at risk of misleading the public on a very important issue.

What is updater exe and how to remove it

What is updater.exe?

This file may be malware but also may be legit. It is often used by software developers as an update module but unfortunately cyber criminals use it as well. Let?s start with what a website is?

A website is a collection of web pages saved on a server( known as web server)that runs 24x7x365(Server that is running all the time ). A web page is what you see on the screen when you type in a web address like http://www.yahoo.com, click on a link, or put a query in a search engine. A web page can contain any type of information, and can include text, color, graphics, animation and sound. For example, when you type www.yahoo.com you see the yahoo?s webpage and that is the default page of domain yahoo.com which opens first and so it?s called the yahoo?s home page.

What is a web server? A Web server is a computer that holds the files for one or more sites. A very large Web site may be spread over a number of servers in different geographic locations. IBM is a good example; its Web site consists of thousands of files spread out over many servers in world-wide locations.

So in other words we can say ?A Web site is a related collection of World Wide Web (WWW) files that includes a beginning file called a home page?.

A website is typically written in HTML, which is almost always accessible via HTTP, a protocol that transfers information from the Web server to display in the users Web browser. And hence when in the browser you type www.netflix.com ,browser automatically change the address as http://www.netflix.com/ . Which means the website Netflix.com is accessed by http (hyper text transfer protocol) and the forward slash added in the end of the address is telling the web server to transfer the home page of website netflix.com.

Web Address

The three primary things to make a website are domain name, web host and a topic. So, you know you want to create a website, but first you need to consider what the website will be about. Knowing what the website is about will help determine your domain name.

So the first step in creating a website is to register a Domain name. Now to understand the domain name registration you have to first understand the Domain Name System (DNS) for a deep knowledge of how website works?

Domain Name System is the global address book for internet just like the phone book in your cell phone. So when you have to call your friend you actually find his name in address book and dial his name but it?s his phone number which is dialed and connected to same way each website also has an address on internet by which it is accessed and that address is known as IP address and typically written as 31.124.56.80 so if you have to open a website you can also type the IP address of that website in the browser and the browser will open it for you. Normally this IP address is always the IP address of the web server where the web pages are held or hosted. But remembering the IP address of any website is not easy so the concept of DNS came and it actually maintains the name and IP address of the entire website in the world and translates the web address in text format into IP address.

DNS server is the IP address that we set in the computers network connection settings that is contacted every time we type any website address in the browser and try to load it.And you wont believe that every DNS server also has its another DNS server address set in its network connection settings.The DNS system is, in fact, its own network. If one DNS server doesnt know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one, and so on, until the correct IP address is returned.

So to reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer -- a name or a number. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination, we wouldnt have one global Internet. So managing, maintaining and administrating the domain name and IP address and other associated services with it are called Domain name system. {This picture states that when a user types a name of a website in his browser and hits enter to open any website. The browser first sends the request to DNS server to check the IP address for the website which is the IP address of the hosting Web Server once your browser gets the IP address of hosting web server it then sends the get page command to website hosting server and website hosting server then fulfills the request by sending the home page of that website.}

Domain name registration and administration is mainly carried out by the one international body named Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN),it coordinates with Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions, which are key technical services critical to the continued operations of the Internets underlying address book, the Domain Name System (DNS).

But ICANN will not register a domain name for you because it has accredited many companies to act as a registrar so you have to go to one of them. And a good example of them is godaddy.com which is an accredited registrar of ICANN. Few other famous accredited registrars are Namecheap.com, Amazon Registrar, Inc., BigRock Solutions Ltd. And register.com etc.So before registering a domain with any registrar, please check if it is accredited with ICANN.

So the first step in creating a website is to go to Namecheap.com.And check if the domain name you have decided is available.So type in the name of domain( mydomain.com) in search box and then click search as shown in the picture 1(a).

Now if that domain is not available it would not give you the option of buying rather it would show you the option to make an offer as its going to buy it from the existing website owner as shown in the picture below.

That domain regbuildforme.com is available so It gives me the option to buy that domain for $10.69/year. so I would click on add to cart button and then click On view cart once it shows in the cart on right hand side. then select the no of years you want to purchase that domain for and then click confirm order and then it is going to ask you to login with your existing user ID and Password if you have, otherwise create an account by filling up the information and then you will be redirected to payment method page so you have to select a payment method like by credit card, debit card or by PayPal account. So fill in the card details and click continue at the bottom, verify the payment and once payment is confirmed you will get a mail from Namecheap.com in your registered email which will have all the necessary information about your purchase and login.

So now you have purchased a domain but you still don?t have a website because your domain does not point to any website on any hosting web server. So you will have to get a hosting account to host a website.In other words that means you have to buy space on a Web server (Which runs 24*7 and can be accessed anytime from anywhere) to keep your webpages so that it can be accessed online anytime. So by now you should have your website written in HTML language and should be ready. Keep all these WebPages in one folder and now get a hosting account. So let?s start with hosting your own registered domain. So just as shown in picture 1-(d) below fill in the details and click on to create account. Here burywire.com is domail which I registered and now going to host on 000Webhost.com.It will redirect you to the account list and will show you the Status as building website and then it will say pending verification so you better check your inbox and follow the link in the mail to verify your email address and after the verification is done the status of your website under the list will show as active as shown in pic 1(e) .

Now you just need to go to your domain registrar and you need to change the DNS settings of the registrar to point your domain to the 000webhost server. It?s very simple you just need to change the DNS server address of your Namecheap.com registrar to the DNS server of 000webhost which are normally ns01.000webhost.com and ns02.000webhost.com but I would recommend you to better check that in account details by going into the C panel of the 000webhost.Refer to the picture 1(f) below for more information.

Now you will need to go to your domain registrar to change the DNS server address i.e to tell the global DNS that your WebPages are held at 000webhost server.Here my domain registrar is Namecheap.com. So lets login there and you will see the home page of your account something like below Picture 1(g).

Then click on the first option ?Your Domains/Products? on the right hand side. And then you will see the list of domain you have registered as shown in the pic 1-(i). So click on the domain name you want to modify the settings for.And then on next page look at the left hand side menu options for Domain Nameserver setup link as shown in picture1-(h) and click it to change the DNS server to ns01.000webhost.com and record 2 as ns02.000webhost.com and you are done.

Now after changing this value your domain registrar may take few hours to update the records.Once the records are updated the 000webhost will start displaying your page and your website is ups and running.

What is AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard and how to remove it

Before I tell you how to best protect yourself from being infected by AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard, we are first going to take a look at what it actually is. As they say, to be forewarned is to be forearmed and if you want to know how to adequately defend yourself against this pest of the internet, knowing your enemy is a very good step in the right direction.

AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard is a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) that surreptitiously installs itself on your PC or laptop. Its not a virus as some people would call it. Usually without you suspecting a thing about it! So why it is only potentially unwanted and not definitely unwanted as you may assume? Does that mean that you might actually want a AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard installed on your computer? Well, no, not really, because PUPs are generally not only useless, but they can have a real negative effect on your user experience too. The only reason these programs are potentially unwanted is because they come in the shape of tools and extensions that might actually be useful, at least some users may think so. The fact is though, that not only do they have way less usability than the ones you already had installed but they have a very annoying habit of redirecting your internet searches to websites of their own choice.

And the way in which they do this gives cause for concern too, for when AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard is installed on your PC it will hijack your browser, remove your old tool bar etc and replace it with their own. You have no say in this whatsoever! It must be noted that most PUPs are not dangerous - they wont steal your data or lock your files and hold them to ransom like some ransomware, but they can be extremely annoying. Besides, they can install adware and browser hijackers on your computer which isnt a good thing either.

How is AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard installed?

In the majority of cases it is packaged with another app or program. Sometimes this occurs when an established company decides to do an emerging company a good deed by allowing the AnyWhere Access Setup Wizard to piggy back on their product, thereby helping them to drive traffic to their website. However, it is actually more likely that programs or tools on offer from totally legit companies are being packaged with PUPs ? completely unbeknown to them.

How do I bypass the AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard trap?

A good place to start is by checking what programs you actually have installed on your computer. That way, if something odd pops up, youll be able to identify the culprit and delete it as quickly as possible ? as soon as you notice that new pop-up window at startup for example. And lets face it- its hard NOT to notice a new pop-up! What is more, you may notice a new Desktop shortcut called "Continue live installation.lnk". C:Users[User Name]DesktopContinue Live Installation.lnk. Its also a sing on adware/PUP infection. It can also modify Windows registry and create schedule tasks that display AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard window each time Windows starts.

Secondly, what you really need to be doing is to pay greater attention when you are downloading something. Because Any Where Access Setup Wizard is only potentially unwanted, it does usually get a name check in End User License Agreements, so read these carefully ? and avoid getting bitten by it!

AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard Removal Guide:

1. First of all, download anti-malware software and run a full system scan. It will detect and remove this infection from your computer. You may then follow the manual removal instructions below to remove the leftover traces of this malware. Hopefully you wont have to do that.

2. Remove AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard related programs from your computer using the Add/Remove Programs control panel (Windows XP) or Uninstall a program control panel (Windows 7 and Windows 8).

Go to the Start Menu. Select Control Panel ? Add/Remove Programs.
If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, select Control Panel ? Uninstall a Program.

If you are using Windows 8, simply drag your mouse pointer to the right edge of the screen, select Search from the list and search for "control panel".

Or you can right-click on a bottom left hot corner (formerly known as the Start button) and select Control panel from there.

3. When the Add/Remove Programs or the Uninstall a Program screen is displayed, scroll through the list of currently installed programs and remove the following:

AnyWhereAccess
GoSave
SalePlus
SaveNewaAppz
and any other recently installed application

Simply select each application and click Remove. If you are using Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, click Uninstall up near the top of that window. When youre done, please close the Control Panel screen.

Remove AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard related extensions from Google Chrome:

1. Click on Chrome menu button. Go to Tools ? Extensions.

2. Click on the trashcan icon to remove AnyWhereAccess, SalePlus, MediaPlayerV1, Gosave, HD-Plus 3.5 and other extensions that you do not recognize.

If the removal option is grayed out then read how to remove extensions installed by enterprise policy.

Remove AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard related extensions from Mozilla Firefox:

1. Open Mozilla Firefox. Go to Tools ? Add-ons.

2. Select Extensions. Click Remove button to remove AnyWhereAccess, SalePlus, Gosave, MediaPlayerV1, HD-Plus 3.5 and other extensions that you do not recognize.

Remove AnyWhereAccess Setup Wizard related add-ons from Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools ? Manage Add-ons. If you have the latest version, simply click on the Settings button.

Auto Scrolling in Windows 7 - How do you stop it??

Every time I open a folder or menu, the list scrolls straight down to the bottom.ÿ Everything from printer properties, to document folders, sound settings etc etc etc.ÿ All folders and menus do it and its starting to really annoy me.ÿ Even when I go to
add something to favourites, if I click on the drop down to select a folder, it just scrolls back up and or down and wont let me select a folder, or even if I am installing a new program, it wont even let me select the country as it scrolls to the bottom.ÿ
Happens on the machine and on the net.ÿ I have tried with and without a mouse, have tried 3 different mice and have uninstalled all three and done it over again, each time updating the drivers.
Is it something to do with this aero thing?ÿ I think Ive looked
absolutely everywhere in the settings, but I still could have missed something.ÿ Can someone please help??ÿ I am using a brand new Lenovo ThinkPad with Win 7 Pro.ÿ Im at my wits end..
please help me......

You may try these:
Step 1: Run a virus scan.
You can do an online virus scan by clicking on the linkÿhttp://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htmÿÿÿand Clicking on
the Full Service scan and accept the Agreement.

Step 2: This can also happen if there are any software conflict.
In Clean Boot, windows use a minimal set of services and startup programs so that software conflict is eliminated.
To put the computer in clean boot state follow the steps in the article

Note: Please ensure that the computer is set to start as usual by following the step 7 from the article.

Access the files on your computer via MY COMPUTER
Under the C: drive, access the WINDOWS folder
Select the SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTION folder, followed by the DOWNLOAD folder.
Delete any files within this download folder.
If you are unable to delete these files, open the command prompt (CMD) as the administrator, and type "net stop wuauserv" into the CMD prompt window. Press ENTER. This should allow you to delete the files from step 4.
Once the files are deleted, open and run the CMD as the administrator and type "wuauclt.exe /updatenow". Press ENTER.
