Tech talent software Developers in Africa Apply for Mark Zuckerbergs Andela Talent Hunt

Brilliance is evenly distributed; opportunity is not

Andela

About Andela

Andela provides companies with access to the top 1% of global tech talent. They identify high-potential developers on the African continent, shape them into world-class technical leaders, and pair them with companies as full-time, distributed team members. From Udacity to Microsoft, companies at all stages have partnered with Andela to accelerate their product roadmaps while minimizing time spent interviewing, on-boarding, and training new hires.

According to Mark Zuckerberg on His Facebook Page,

Mark Zuckerberg

As part of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Priscilla and I are investing in an education company called Andela.
We live in a world where talent is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not. Andelas mission is to close that gap.
I was lucky to be born in a wealthy country where I had access to computers and the internet. If I had been born somewhere else, Im not sure I would have been able to start Facebook -- or at least it would have taken a lot longer and been more difficult.
The gap between talent and opportunity is among the greatest in Africa. Six out of every ten Africans are under the age of 35 -- and in some places, more than half of them are out of work.
Andela is working to unlock that potential by finding and training top tech talent in Africa. After a six-month software development program, Andela Fellows work remotely for Fortune 500 companies and startups around the world. Companies get access to great developers, and developers in Africa get the opportunity to use their skills and support their communities.
Priscilla and I believe in supporting innovative models of learning wherever they are around the world -- and what Andela is doing is pretty amazing. Check out andela.com to learn more.

Select Top Talent

Tech Support Acer Iconia w700 slow after installing Windows 8 1

Acer Iconia w700 slow after installing Windows 8.1

Hey All,

Is anyone else having troubles with Windows 8.1 on their w700? Ever since installing the upgrade my computer has been running _sooo slowww_.ÿ

It chunks all the time.
From the task manager I can see that its the SDD is constantly reading or writing stuff.
As far as I can tell, its only the "system" that is doing it, not any software that Ive installed.

Starting up and shutting down is much slower too.
When I hit the Acer Power Button in the task bar I have to wait 5-10s for the options to appear.
It used to be instantaneous.

The touch screen now stops working when Im using Chrome too.
Huge pain in the butt.

Anyone?

Tech Support All 32 bit browsers crash as soon as they open under Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

All 32-bit browsers crash as soon as they open under Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit)

A friend brought her laptop hoping I would be able to find the problem and fix it.
After weeks of searching and researching, I could not find an answer.
We opted to re-installed the factory Image on back on the computer.
Sadly, the only thing we can do now
is open IE (64-bit) All other browsers still keep crashing as soon as they start up.
We have ensured that the computer is up to date all current drivers are installed, but the issue still persists.
We have booted the computer in safe mode an the same thing
still happens.
I have also done selective startup and nothing changes, the browser still crashes as soon as it opens.
The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5517
The following is what I get from the Event Viewer.

Hi Don,
Thanks for the information, but I have already done all of the things you mentioned.
I even re-registered all the dll files for IE but that did not seem to work.
My guess would be some sort of a virus that was not being detected by any of the antivirus scanners.
We wiped the OS partition completely and then launched the Acer eRecovery (Alt + F10) tool.
The system is now back up and running with no issues.
Thanks anyways!

In this method we will try to Boot in Safe mode with Networking and see if the error still persists.

  • Search "MSCONFIG" and Open.
  • Click on Boot Tab
  • Tick Safe Boot in Boot Option
  • Select Network.
  • Click Apply and OK.
  • Reboot your System.

US government pushed tech firms to hand over source code

US government pushed tech firms to hand over source code

Obtaining a companys source code makes it radically easier to find security flaws and vulnerabilities for surveillance and intelligence-gathering operations.

The US courthouse in Washington DC which houses the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which authorizes the governments surveillance operations.

NEW YORK -- The US government has made numerous attempts to obtain source code from tech companies in an effort to find security flaws that could be used for surveillance or investigations.

The government has demanded source code in civil cases filed under seal but also by seeking clandestine rulings authorized under the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), a person with direct knowledge of these demands told ZDNet. Were not naming the person as they relayed information that is likely classified.

With these hearings held in secret and away from the public gaze, the person said that the tech companies hit by these demands are losing "most of the time."

When asked, a spokesperson for the Justice Dept. acknowledged that the department has demanded source code and private encryption keys before. In a recent filing against Apple, the government cited a 2013 case where it won a court order demanding that Lavabit, an encrypted email provider said to have been used by whistleblower Edward Snowden, must turn over its source code and private keys. The Justice Dept. used that same filing to imply it would, in a similar effort, demand Apples source code and private keys in its ongoing case in an effort to compel the companys help by unlocking an iPhone used by the San Bernardino shooter.

Asked whether the Justice Dept. would demand source code in the future, the spokesperson declined to comment.

Its not uncommon for tech companies to refer to their source code as the "crown jewel" of their business. The highly sensitive code can reveal future products and services. Source code can also be used to find security vulnerabilities and weaknesses that government agencies could use to conduct surveillance or collect evidence as part of ongoing investigations.

Given to a rival or an unauthorized source, the damage can be incalculable.

We contacted more than a dozen tech companies in the Fortune 500. Unsurprisingly, none would say on the record if they had ever received such a request or demand from the government.

Cisco said in an emailed statement: "We have not and we will not hand over source code to any customers, especially governments."

IBM referred to a 2014 statement saying that the company does not provide "software source code or encryption keys to the NSA or any other government agency for the purpose of accessing client data." A spokesperson confirmed that the statement is still valid, but did not comment further on whether source code had been handed over to a government agency for any other reason.

Microsoft, Juniper Networks, and Seagate declined to comment.

Dell and EMC did not comment at the time of publication. Lenovo, Micron, Oracle, Texas Instruments, and Western Digital did not respond to requests for comment. (If this changes, we will provide updates.)

Apples software chief Craig Federighi said in a sworn court declaration this week alongside the companys latest bid to dismiss the governments claims in the San Bernardino case that Apple has never revealed its source code to any government.

"Apple has also not provided any government with its proprietary iOS source code," wrote Federighi.

"While governmental agencies in various countries, including the United States, perform regulatory reviews of new iPhone releases, all that Apple provides in those circumstances is an unmodified iPhone device," he said.

The declaration was in part to allay fears (and the US governments claims) that it had modified iPhone software to agree to Chinas security checks, which include turning over source code to its inspectors.

But even senior tech executives may not know if their source code or proprietary technology had been turned over to the government, particularly if the order came from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC).

The secretive Washington DC-based court, created in 1979 to oversee the governments surveillance warrants, has authorized more than 99 percent of all surveillance requests. The court has broad-sweeping powers to force companies to turn over customer data via clandestine surveillance programs and authorize US intelligence agencies to record an entire foreign countrys phone calls, as well as conduct tailored hacking operations on high-value targets.

FISA orders are generally served to a companys general counsel, or a "custodian of records" within the legal department. (Smaller companies that cant afford their own legal departments often outsource their compliance to third-party companies.) These orders are understood to be typically for records or customer data.

These orders are so highly classified that simply acknowledging an orders existence is illegal, even a companys chief executive or members of the board may not be told. Only those who are necessary to execute the order would know, and would be subject to the same secrecy provisions.

Given that Federighi heads the division, it would be almost impossible to keep from him the existence of a FISA order demanding the companys source code.

It would not be the first time that the US government has reportedly used proprietary code and technology from American companies to further its surveillance efforts.

Top secret NSA documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden, reported in German magazine Der Spiegel in late-2013, have suggested some hardware and software makers were compelled to hand over source code to assist in government surveillance.

The NSAs catalog of implants and software backdoors suggest that some companies, including Dell, Huawei, and Juniper -- which was publicly linked to an "unauthorized" backdoor -- had their servers and firewall products targeted and attacked through various exploits. Other exploits were able to infiltrate firmware of hard drives manufactured by Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, and Samsung.

Last year, antivirus maker and security firm Kaspersky later found evidence that the NSA had obtained source code from a number of prominent hard drive makers -- a claim the NSA denied -- to quietly install software used to eavesdrop on the majority of the worlds computers.

"There is zero chance that someone could rewrite the [hard drive] operating system using public information," said one of the researchers.

What Weƒ??ll Do When Ad Tech Dies

What Weƒ??ll Do When Ad Tech Dies

When you analyze the effects of fraud, viewability and ad blocking on the digital display advertising business, then add the ever-increasing abilities of the traffic launderers to game the system, you reach an inevitable conclusion: ad tech has evolved into a toxic ecosystem that is killing itself, and it is taking digital advertising with it.

How We Got Here

In the golden age of digital, Google SEO ruled the web. Back then, you wanted the best possible placement for your organic search results. This meant following Google?s rules for almost every aspect of your online architecture. That was then.

Today, clickbait and recommendation platforms rule the web. The consequences of this transition are unfortunate. Publishers are economically motivated to use any means to maximize page views. This has spawned a plague of traffic brokers who specialize in traffic laundering at an almost unbelievable scale. It has also caused publishers to devolve user interfaces into the emotionally unsatisfying experiences they are today, motivating users to deploy content blockers, motivating publishers to create countermeasures, elevating the arms race to the next level, resulting in a vortex that is sucking the entire industry into oblivion.

At its core, ad tech?s sorry state is a function of scale and misguided media procurement strategies. Publishers need more traffic than they can realistically generate because their ?real? traffic is undervalued or, some would say, indistinguishable from fraudulent traffic. If you need to take an order for 20 million impressions and you only have 2 million to sell, you will use a traffic broker to procure the additional 18 million impressions ? everyone is doing it, even if they think they aren?t. Fraud is out of control.

A regulatory revolt is on the horizon. Things are going to change, whether they change because of a government agency or civil lawsuits or simply an economic crackdown. Too much money is being wasted in too blatant a way for this fraudulent behavior to continue unchecked.

I don?t want to speculate as to the method of ad tech?s demise. If I had to guess, I would posit a reinvention of ad tech with regulatory oversight, rather than its total destruction. But instead of worrying about where traditional ad tech may end up, I?d like to explore a possible future for the evolution of consumer messaging via the Internet.

Business Outcomes Are Better than Impressions

How can small and midsized publishers compete with super-scaled mega-sites without resorting to traffic laundering? By turning the business model right-side up again.

No business wants to purchase a CPM or a GRP or an impression. Given a choice, most businesses would prefer to purchase a business outcome. You could argue that the system already does this. It does not. We have developed sophisticated proxies that are optimized to correlate to business outcomes, but we (the industry) sell impressions. What if we actually sold business outcomes?

I?m not talking about direct response advertising. It already exists, and it doesn?t work for brand advertising or nonimmediate calls to action such as upcoming sales events. I am suggesting that through the use of data scientific research and machine-learning tools, we are on the cusp of understanding how to generate leads that will result in acquired customers and directly drive business outcomes. The goal is not new, but awesome new tools are just becoming commercialized.

Relentless Retargeting

If you watch a video entitled ?Unboxing the Samsung Galaxy S7? four times, there?s a pretty good chance that you are in the market for a new smartphone. This is well understood. Current ad tech tools relentlessly retarget you to the point where you cannot visit another website for days without seeing display ads for an S7 or a competing brand that is willing to pay more money than Samsung to get in front of a person who is ?in market? for a new device. There is a better way.

There are new tools emerging that enable publishers to combine common measurements for content adjacency, context, and behavioral targeting with pattern-matching algorithms to rank users into ?in market? clusters (as opposed to targeting specific people). There are several programmatic creative tools capable of putting the right message in front of the clusters. The machine learning algorithms can continuously refine the clusters and, in many cases, can identify attributable paths to purchase. The result is the ability to guarantee a business outcome at a price. If publishers believe that advertising works, they can prove it by assuming some (or all) of the risk for a greater reward.

This may look like an iterative step up from bounties, and it may be. But the capabilities of the toolsets are increasing at an exponential rate.

Adtopia

Adtopia might look like this: platforms continue to sell targeted impressions (but would eventually offer business outcomes). Mega-sites get regulated into unprofitability. Quality publishers, realizing that they can never compete with platforms or mega-sites, evolve super-sophisticated data-driven business outcome capabilities and enjoy a renaissance where erudition (the filter set of choice) leads to guaranteed business outcomes for the highest-paying clients.

It won?t happen this way. There is no Adtopia, and ad tech will be with us in its current form until someone goes to jail. That said, things have got to change, and data science can lead the way.

Note: I have written a few articles that help illustrate the issue including: Non-Human Traffic, Ad Fraud and Viewability, The Root of Ad Evil, and Ad Blocking ? This Time It?s Serious.

Tech Support Pop up Virus Removal Guide

Tech Support Pop up Virus Removal Guide

I am sure you know as well as I do that these days, using the internet is quite a dangerous activity! And you dont even have to be using the Dark Web to fall foul of the myriad of software programs that have been designed to do us harm. Being infected by malware can be a distressing experience ? and it can cost you dearly in time and money, and even your identity.

There are programs that will hijack your browsers, display scam tech support pop ups and fake BSOD screens, those that trick you into handing over money for fix of your supposedly detected computer errors or malware infections, others that steal your passwords and hack your email, social media and even bank accounts. And because the majority of these malicious programs are bundled with free software, files or apps, we are all at risk of contracting an infection every single time we download something.

A fake message from securepcnow.com claiming that your data is at risk because of detected security errors:

Another fake pop-up message from errorscript.co trying to convince you that your computer is infected with malware. It even tries to mimic Microsoft Security Essentials detection window to make it look more reliable:

And finally, the most popular scam pop-up these days - fake BSOD claiming that your system security is at risk:

Even computer or tech support pop ups, which are often seen as less of a menace than some of the other types of software, can cause you harm and seriously disrupt the way you use your computer. Such pop-ups are usually displayed by adware installed on your computer. So, if you are getting fake tech support pop-ups then you should scan your computer for adware and other malware. But is adware the same as spyware? After all they are both often discussed in the same breath so you could be forgiven for thinking that they are one and the same. Lets take a look at the similarities between the two.

What do adware and spyware have to do with each other?

Adware has one defining trait that is very much its own: its ability to show you an endless stream of annoying and fake tech support pop-up windows and banner adverts. Spyware does not do this but it does have an even more sinister trick up its sleeve ? read on to find out what.

The reason that adware and spyware are often lumbered together in articles about malware is that adware does have some spy-like characteristics. When adware is installing itself on your PC it also installs a tracing component that monitors your internet usage and tracks and records which websites you visit. It then sends this data back to the adware?s programmer who can then show you adverts that are closely related to the goods or services that you have been looking at online.

Spyware on the other hand will not only survey which websites you visit ? it takes its creepy and intrusive antics one step ? a big step ? further. Spyware often installs something called a keylogger on your machine and this will monitor which keys you type. This data is collected and then sent to the programmer or owner of the spyware so that they can discover ? and of course then use - your passwords, login details, online bank account details, credit card numbers and anything else they care to discover about you.

Protecting yourself from adware and fake tech support pop-ups

After reading the above you probably want to learn how to protect yourself. Well, much as we all love to download the plethora of free apps and software that are available out there, to protect yourself you need to download with care. And that means reading Ts & Cs carefully when youre downloading to ensure youre not also installing any nasty add-ons. If your computer has been infected by adware which displays tech support scam pop-ups saying that you need to call certain phone number for assistance - DONT and instead please follow the steps in the removal guide below. If you call the number you will probably lose at least $100 and compromise your computer security. If you have questions, please leave a comment down below. Good luck and be safe online!

Tech privacy and security A debate we need to have Naked CIO

Tech privacy and security A debate we need to have Naked CIO

Its time to think hard about the attitudes of technology companies towards privacy and security.

ciosech.jpg

Apple has announced it is fighting a court order in the US which would allow authorities to gain access to the contents of an iPhone as part of a terrorist investigation.

It amazes me that technology companies can put in place encryption that prevent these type of investigations ? yet under similar circumstances a warrant can allow authorities access to homes, cars and personal effects without condition or compromise.

But this incident is just one of many that involves tech companies and privacy.
And the flip side is that so many other tech companies cite the importance of privacy and security when it suits them but yet collect, aggregate, sell, decipher and use personal data to forward their own strategic and financial goals.

They track location, usage behavior, habits and desires in order to benefit advertisers and support their own business and application development. Their privacy policies even mitigate their liability from the collection and security of this data and in some cases limit their responsibility for securing customer information.

The fact is these tech companies survive and grow on disseminating personal information where is suits them, yet seem to want to be community activists when it doesnt.

They can achieve this through slick PR campaigns around encryption and fighting authorities on information disclosure ? to offset the multiple legal battles in European courts and beyond that deal with customer privacy.
Years ago at a symposium a question was posed when Google was in its formative stages. Do you fear Google? It was an interesting question with even more interesting answers. I stood up and said Yes, because the moment you dont fear them you could regret it. By fearing them you recognize their ability to be too big and too influential within the fabric of our lives.

Regardless of your geopolitical opinions these are fundamental question that needs to be asked. Are we now at the point where we have allowed these companies to own too much of our data without the recourse to reign them in?

As IT leaders within organizations that invariably collect information it is our duty to ask those questions of ourselves, too.

Information is valuable yet we need to be able to balance the need to understand our customers better with the basics of protecting their privacy.

At what point do we cross the line between collecting information to better inform decisions on business needs, and storing and analyzing data on individuals that compromises their understanding of what is appropriate?
